Lodgings and eateries at Sundance
Canyons ResortHyatt Escala LodgeAn estimated 40,000 to 50,000 Sundance festgoers descend on Park City -- which has a permanent population of a mere 8,000 -- during the annual film blowout, clogging streets, sidewalks and eateries, and creating transportation nightmares. Although screening venues in Salt Lake City may be less crowded, most industryites prefer to be where the action is: on -- or just off -- Park City's historic Main Street.By early January, lodging for the fest's first four days will be at a premium; however, day five through the fest's closing weekend typically offer more options. The least expensive stay in Park City is the Chateau Apres, with $45 per night/per person dorms (but limited availability). The booking firm Park City Crash Pads offers lower-cost properties with amenities such as free wi-fi.Just outside of town, but accessible by free Park City buses, the Canyons Resort has several plush apartment-style accommodations, in addition to the Waldorf Astoria Park City (opened in 2009). The Hyatt Escala Lodge (opened in November 2010) offers a discount for the second half of the fest.Salt Lake City hotels are less pricey; the drive to Park City is just under an hour depending on weather.Websites VRBO.com and Craig's List are another resource for last-minute bookings -- though if a deal is too good to be true, well, you know. Quick bites are a fest must, since most higher-end eateries are booked for private dinners. Open 24/7, Fresh Market (formerly Albertsons) offers a sandwich counter and in-store Starbucks. Burritos from El Chubasco (close to festival HQ at 1890 Bonanza Dr.) are handy for wait-list lines, and the year-old Sammy's Bistro (in the same minimall at 1890 Bonanza Dr.) has sandwiches, soups and salads. Often overlooked, the cafeteria at Park City Mountain Resort's Legacy Cafe is a reliable choice for breakfast and lunch, and is on a shuttle route. The Yard event space (formerly home to non-official gifting lounges) at a former lumber yard near the Yarrow Hotel will be an official festival venue this year, hosting New Frontier films. Onsite is a 400-car parking lot and a stop for the express shuttle to the Temple Theater. Within the Yard will be a cafe with a newly installed NY-style pizza oven. Run by the proprietors of the Blind Dog Restaurant and Sushi (also within the complex), the Yard cafe will open be open daily from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and then transform into the fest's latenight lounge.Other new eateries include: Park City's first-ever kosher restaurant, the Bistro at the Canyons Resort; the locally stocked Farm at the Canyons Resort; and for a high-altitude nosh, Yama Sushi at the Montage Resort in Deer Valley. Easy Street at the Sky Lodge recently added gluten-free menu items; the hotel's rooftop Sky Blue bar remains a civilized retreat above Main Street's frenzy.Music is an integral part of Sundance activities. Although the sheriff padlocked the city's largest music venue Harry O's earlier this year, it will be re-incarnated as Park City Live during the fest. The ASCAP Music Cafe returns to lower Main Street during the day; a program that changes nightly will showcase music from festival films -- an event that will require a fest credential along with tickets available at the main box office.Fest organizers will tweet scheduling changes, screenings and ASCAP Music Cafe nighttime shows via @sundancefestnow. A free Sundance festival mobile phone app is available for iPhone, iPad and Android users. The former Racquet Club Theater is back, rebuilt with 550 seats and renamed the MARC. Expect an expanded concession stand (from the same vendors at the Library Theater) as the popular Racquet Club Grill is no more.As always, warm socks and ibuprofen should be at top of any packing list. Current crafts election strategy
Current TV made headlines early in the year for hiring Keith Olbermann on the heels of his messy exit from MSNBC. Bringing Olbermann into the fold was the start of a remake from a network centered on docus and user-generated material to a more traditional cable news operation. Current prexy David Bohrman said that the shift in focus was well timed as the 2012 presidential election season kicks into high gear next month. But is Olbermann's presence enough to make Current a contender in the 24-hour news cycle? It can't compete with its established rivals in breaking news, but it can offer in-depth political analysis, as long as its pundits and talking heads are not "shouting like in 'Crossfire' or (sticking to) continuous talking points," Bohrman said. For the coming electoral season, the plan is to monitor the debates on broadcast news and larger cablers and to sic the net's stable of pundits on the current crop of GOP hopefuls as they tear at each other. For the future, Bohrman wants to see the net wade deeper into the political fray, hosting debates and interviewing candidates. "Hopefully," he said, "we'll hold some politicians' feet to the fire." Columbia Journalism Review exec editor Mike Hoyt told Variety that Olbermann's influence is almost certainly diminished by his move to the smaller platform of Current, but the venue still has its benefits. "Olbermann surely lost viewers, when he left a network with a large number (of viewers) for a network with many fewer," Hoyt said. "But he surely gained a lot in terms of editorial control and influence over his network's programming. And maybe he can build on that." According to financial data provided by SNL Kagan, Current's operating revenue has grown to $115 million in 2011 from $99 million last year. But its programming expenses have ballooned as it shifts resources to personality-driven analysis programming and cuts personnel from Peabody-winning docu series "Vanguard." Estimates for programming expenses are up from about $52 million in 2010 to $64 million this year, with the addition of Olbermann, fellow MSNBC alum Cenk Uygur and former Michigan governor Jennifer Granholm to the net's slate of contributors. Affiliate fees are up $10 million, though the rate remains flat at 12 per sub, and ad revenue is up to a little under $23 million from less than $16 million last year. Ratings info for the net is hard to come by, largely because of its size, but the snapshot provided by an exhaustive cable ranker from the week ended Dec. 4 is instructive. Current ranks No. 86 among the top 100 cablers, tied with boutique music channel VH1 Classics. Current is serious about the news network programming model. While most fledgling cablers start off trying to wedge themselves into a weak primetime slot one night a week (and widen from there), Current is focusing on stripped programming: Uygur's "The Young Turks," Olbermann's "Countdown," then Granholm's "War Room," running consecutively from 7 to 10 p.m. "All three programs every night, five nights a week are really what we're going to focus on," said Bohrman. "We've got a lot of room to grow here. We've really just been doing 'Vanguard' here for a while now. I'd like to grow out the daytime, which would require us to build out the broadcast operation." Scarlett Johansson with Elle Fanning
Richard Lovett, Julie Yorn and Tom Rothman celebrate in Gotham.
Ben Seeder and Dustin Ybarra enter into the "Zoo" spirit.
Because the scene-stealing snakes, tigers, porcupines, apes and lions in Last Century Fox's "We Purchased a Zoo" were not asked either to the Ziegfeld preem or even the Royalton Hotel after-party, it appeared only appropriate to request the pic's flock of human stars which animal most reflected their personality. "I usually believed that basically thought about being a pet, I'd desire to be a home cat," stated Scarlett Johansson, "there is however no house felines within this movie. And So I guess a large cat." Just like a leopard? "Less regal like a leopard," the actress qualified. NY's production incentive includes a 30% refundable tax credit applied against qualified costs. Additionally towards the BLS report, the incentives' success can also be measured through the development in NY projects. "It's of no real surprise the only real dip in job growth came throughout 2009, annually funding for that NY Condition incentive briefly went dry," he added. These extra times of employment keep stars working and enable them to to be eligible for a medical health insurance and pension benefits.""States realize that film and tv production bring elevated investment and good jobs, and that's why NY put incentives in position and the reason why you begin to see the positive year-after-year development in this sector," stated Vans Stevenson, senior Vice president of condition government matters in the Film Association of America. "Competition between states and Canada is fierce of these jobs since they're the sorts of work people want - with benefits as well as an average salary of $79,000 annually - which explains why a condition like NY concentrates on growing this sector."Stevenson also challenged recent claims the production tax credit was in some way directly affecting funding for public schools, specifically in NY City. "The assertion that public school students not have the educational assets because there's a financial budget allocation for that production incentive program is intellectually dishonest and factually incorrect," he stated. "For instance, last year the film and tv production companies spent $5.10 for each dollar invested through the condition within the program, based on the set of the Empire Condition Film Production Credit released August 2010 through the NY Condition Department of Taxation and Finance and also the NY Condition Governor's Office of movement Picture and tv Development. Michael Bay May Return for 'Transformers 4': Report
Proving that even passion projects for high-grossing directors cost a pound of flesh, Vulture reports that Michael Bay may come back for a fourth 'Transformers' film -- provided the studio lets him make 'Pain and Gain.' "Without 'Pain & Gain,' there's not tit for tat," said a source to Vulture. "That's Paramount's leverage." Bay has been looking to make 'Pain and Gain,' based on a series of articles in the Miami New Times, since 1999. (The film -- described as 'Fargo'-esque -- follows two bodybuilders who wind up embroiled in a kidnapping and extortion plot to increasingly terrible results.) Per Vulture, if the deals for 'Pain and Gain' and 'Transformers 4' are reached, things could move very quickly; 'Gain' could shoot in the spring, with 'Transformers' headed to cameras by winter of 2012. While nothing is official yet, apparently Bay and the studio are "not far" from an agreement. During the press for 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon,' it was thought that Bay was done with the series (Shia LaBeouf, who is done with the franchise, said as much), but it appears that isn't the case. What plot 'Transformers 4' will use remains to be seen, but it likely won't be a prequel. Vulture thinks this could all become official in the coming week; considering what happened with Benicio Del Toro, however, don't hold your breath for too long. Manley nicely captures the swirling paranoia of occasions, grounding it inside an all-too-forgotten reality, but he posits these males as genial idiots and, while every so often amusing, their foolishness wears thin. It had depth and gravity additionally to becoming an entertaining ride."His approach, he states, was "to create into it a feeling of fun, but additionally to accept procedure for which makes it as seriously when i would doing Shakespeare."He describes the entire experience as " a pleasure" and states he only switched lower "Thor 2" because of timing. "I certainly wouldn't eliminate coming back to Marvel we'd a great collaboration," he states. He's a few other pointing gigs in development, but his immediate priority would be to feed his restored appetite for film acting following "My Week With Marilyn.""I am very looking forward to doing more functioning on film," he states. Busong (Palawan Fate)
A Cinemalaya presentation of the Solito Arts production in colaboration with Alternative Vision Cinema, Voyage Galleries. (Worldwide sales: Solito Arts, Manila.) Created by Auraeus Solito. Executive producer, Jong p Castro. Co-producers, Hai Balbuena, Baby Ruth Villarama, Chuck Gutierrez, Alfred Vargas. Directed by Auraeus Solito. Script, Kanakan Balintagos, Henry Burgos. With: Alessandra p Rossi, Clifford Banagale, Dax Alejandro, Rodrigo Santikan, Bonivie Budao, Walter Arenio, Chris Haywood. (Tagalog, Palawano, British dialogue)A dreamlike meld of fiction and documentary presented around spiritual values and folklore in the Philippines' Palawan province, "Busong" is enriching as ethnography and sometimes frustrating as entertainment. According to tales told to helmer Auraeus Solito ("The Flourishing of Maximo Oliveros") by his mother, this heavily symbolic essay is superbly shot and consists of many striking sequences, but lengthy stretches of narrative inertia will challenge even devoted arthouse buffs. Pic has clocked extensive fest mileage since its Directors' Week bow at Cannes, and can test offshore commercial waters having a planned March 2012 release in France. Coming back towards the archipelago where he shot the 2002 docu "Basal Banar" (Sacred Ritual of Truth), which concerned risks posed to traditional Palawano existence by exterior business interests, Solito has composed this love letter to his homeland with just the slimest wisp of conventional storytelling. What little narrative it consists of involves Punay (Alessandra p Rossi), a youthful lady with crippling feet injuries along with a terrible skin ailment. Transported inside a hammock by her brother, Angkarang (Rodrigo Santikan), Punay is seeking a healbot for conditions which have avoided her from ever setting feet on the floor. With Punay's broken body becoming a metaphor for that affilictions and dangers facing Palawan, the script detours in to the lives of other people the brothers and sisters encounter on the mission. Distressed widow Ninita (Bonivie Budao) informs the storyline of her late husband, Tony (Walter Arenio), a logger fatally crushed by an amugis tree, that is held sacred in animistic Palawan culture. Briefly assisting to carry Punay's hammock is Lulong (Dax Alejandro), an angler can whose boy has drowned following an encounter having a hotheaded foreigner (Aussie thesp Chris Haywood) who states own the land and ocean which have given Lulong's family for decades. The conflict between old ways and new facts is embodied by Aris (Clifford Banagale, "Bruno"), a descendant of Palawan healers that has came back from Manila to assist Punay. Depictions of shamanistic traditions and tribal customs associated with cycles of birth, dying and resurrection are fascinating, but co-scripters Henry Burgos and Solito (credited under his Palawano tribal title, Kanakan Balintagos) too often break the spell with extended passages by which practically nothing happens. Connections between most of the figures moving with the frame are occasionally tough to determine. It makes sense an end-start experience which will still move many audiences using its plea for that protection and upkeep of Palawan culture, but distance others with hazy storytelling. Even throughout static passages, pic is well offered with a convincing cast of unskilled local stars who hold their very own in the organization of well-known entertainers p Rossi and Banagale. Lensing by ace d.p. Louie Quirino ("Amok") presents magnificent imagery of pristine beaches and forests, along with a sequence by which non-CGI seeing stars hatch from the human face is truly astonishing. Other tech credits are fine. Title means "fate," or "instant karma."Camera (color, HD), Louie Quirino editor, Chuck Gutierrez music, Diwa p Leon production designer, Hai Balbuena art director, Emerson Baltazar seem (stereo system), p Leon line producer, Balbuena underwater camera, Jamael Familara. "Irish jig dancing is a global phenomenon and the series will reveal the world behind the sport in a compelling combination of heart and competition." The network that has explored very unique worlds in Toddlers & Tiaras, Say Yes to the Dress, All-American Muslim, and Little People, Big World starts production on the new series this week. It has ordered eight episodes set to air in the U.S. in Summer 2012 and then internationally later that year. The series, produced by Sirens Media, features several dance schools and each episode zeroes in on individual dancers during rehearsals, preparation, travel, and as they go toe-to-toe during competitions. There's the stress of stiff competition, a strict emphasis on the precision of the dance discipline, unique costume requirements, hours of practice, and, of course, fiercely competitive moms and coaches. The network has also acquired the rights to air the feature-length documentary, Jig. Directed by Sue Bourne, the film captures an in depth look at the discipline via the competitors in last year's Irish Dancing World Championships in Glasgow. TLC did not disclose the air date for the documentary. The trailer for Jig can give you an idea of what we'll see on the new series, Irish Dancing Tweens. Watch it below. Watercooler: Grey's Anatomy ... TV's 99 % Pure Cleaning soap
Scott Foley Hey daytime fans, if you are not already watching Grey's Anatomy, or threw in the towel onto it, it is now time to provide ABC's scrubs-opera another look-see. As this this is a solid serial that may train a particular other medical-based sudser on ABC's early change a few things about how exactly to use effectively without bipolar mobsters or James Franco. Now we all know lots of audiences might have examined of Dallas Sophistication through the years, and nobody is gonna shame ya for your. When the ghost sex and "Gizzie" and also the attracted-out Chief Resident competition went lower, Grey's lost a number of its appeal. But we are happy tell you the patient has retrieved nicely and last evening, shipped an active hour full of dying, dumb choices and respectably soapy drama. Built around the thought of "a poor work day,Inch the paperwork suffered everything: A surgical problem that left Callie and Jackson's spine surgery patient having a loose screw stabbing her heart a transport crisis that stranded Meredith, Alex as well as an ailing infant along the side of the street inside a "powder keg" of the damaged-lower ambulance and, most tragically, the race in order to save Teddy's adorable, persistantly ill husband. Yeah, you kinda understood Scott Foley was condemned, with the vomiting bloodstream cheap he had been operated on at worst hospital on earth. By Yang, believe it or not! Yet i was eating our nails up 'til the ultimate moments, as Owen broke this news to Yang that it absolutely was Henry she so cavalierly treated as yet another dead patient, and Meredith and Alex finally recognized they most likely must have considered to assist the folks within the vehicle that collided using their ambulance. Obviously, none of those problems might have affected some of our heroes had they provided wiser options, but that might be about as fun like a conversation with Lexie. We want these doctors to suffer for his or her stupidity. Will Meredith and Derek find yourself getting an infant? Or agree with anything? Will Teddy forgive her co-workers because of not saving Henry? And may Torres get herself out of what's sure to become real malpractice pickle? Hell, when they could all survive that musical episode this past year, there's without doubt they'll recover. Precisely how they'll manage to do this is exactly what still keeps us inside a lather. Cooper Will not Function As The Guy From UNCLE
He's no more in talks for that filmOne from the disadvantages to as being a guy sought after is the fact that sometimes agendas clash like angry dogs and you've got to allow one project slip when another wins out. While we are not 100% certain for this reason Bradley Cooper has made the decision to decrease from discussions for Warner Bros. movie adaptation of spy Television show The Guy From U.N.C.L.E., it may be a large factor. It's another blow for that film, that has already seen George Clooney skip dealing with the role on Napoleon Solo (the part Cooper ended up being offered). Warners continues to be with the usual wide sweep searching to draw in title talent, and Joel Edgerton continues to be stated just as one Illya Kuryakin, Solo's partner. For individuals that do not can remember the original, U.N.C.L.E. was the sunshine-hearted series that went between 1964 and 1968 with Robert Vaughn as Solo and David McCallum as Kuryakin. The happy couple were worldwide agents set on preventing the evil machinations of diabolical outfit T.H.R.U.S.H., which constantly plotted to create things uncomfortable for that world. As the original show birthed spin-from the Girl From U.N.C.L.E. along with a couple of broadened episodes proven in movie theaters, this is the very first full-blown film version. At this time, U.N.C.L.E. continues to have Steven Soderbergh mounted on direct from Contagion author Scott Z Burns' script.

This Halloween, Don't Forget to Remember Harry Potter's Parents' Death
Curb those Halloween spirits -- today is a day of mourning. At least if you're a 'Harry Potter' fan. Yes, right below the trending topic of "Happy Halloween Everyone" on Twitter is "RIP James and Lily Potter." On a fictional Oct. 31 thirty years ago, the couple sacrificed their lives for their son, Harry. Little did they know that the boy would grow up to be the chosen one and save the entire wizarding world from the evil Lord Voldemort. The Hollywood Reporter points out that some 'Potter' fan sites will be planning a moment of silence today at 3 p.m. GMT (a.k.a. 11 p.m. EDT). The only man who won't be crying? Obviously, Lord Voldemort. However, perhaps the Dark Lord is in a cheerier mood today. According to his Twitter account (yes, Voldemort has a Twitter account), the evil Wizard tweeted "Happy Halloween. Your treat is that I let you live." So, while you're dressing up in your little costumes and going to grab your free candy, just remember that James and Lily Potter died for your right to trick-or-treat. Lindsay Lohans Father Arrested Again
First Published: October 27, 2011 9:10 AM EDT Credit: Getty Images TAMPA, Fla. -- Caption Michael Lohan, father of actress Lindsay Lohan, arrives to the Beverly Hills Courthouse for her probation hearing, at Beverly Hills Courthouse, Sept. 24, 2010The estranged father of actress Lindsay Lohan was back in police custody Thursday, hours after being released from a Tampa jail on domestic violence charges. Tampa police responded to a 911 call from Michael Lohans on-and-off girlfriend early Thursday. Kate Major told police Lohan, 51, made a harassing phone call to her shortly after being released from jail Wednesday afternoon. Lohan called again while police were at Majors condo. Major, 28, put the call on speaker so police could listen. After hearing what Lohan said, the police department notified the Hillsborough County State Attorneys Office of a violation of Judge Walter Heinrichs pre-trial release orders that he stay away from Major and an arrest order was authorized. Police went to the Tahitian Inn in Tampa, where Lohan was reportedly staying. According to a news release from police, Lohan spotted the officers and jumped off a third-floor balcony in an attempt to escape. Lohan was arrested after a short pursuit on foot. He was taken into police custody and taken to the Hillsborough County Jail. There, deputies suspected he may have broken his foot when he jumped off the balcony, so he was taken to Tampa General Hospital for evaluation. Authorities said he will be returned to the jail once hes been cleared by doctors. Lohan was arrested Tuesday on domestic violence charges involving Major, a former reporter for the Star tabloid. Police say he grabbed her arms and pushed her down multiple times during a daylong argument. When Lohan was released from jail Wednesday, he said he didnt do anything and the charges were Majors way of making money. The St. Petersburg Times (http://bit.ly/txPQkt ) reported that Lohan claimed Major set him up to be overheard by police Thursday. She needs help, she calls me, and Im a sucker so I call her back. Im an idiot, Lohan said as he was being put into the back of a police cruiser. In July, a misdemeanor domestic violence charge against Lohan stemming from a fight with Major was dismissed in Los Angeles after she failed to show up for the trial. Lohans attorney said Major declined to cooperate to avoid a court spectacle. Lohan has a history of arrests in NY over allegations of harassment from ex-girlfriends. Meanwhile, his daughter Lindsay Lohan could also return to jail in California after a judge last week ruled she violated probation involving a community service assignment. A Nov. 2 court date was set to decide whether Lindsay Lohan should be jailed. The 25-year-old actress was given probation for a 2007 drunken driving case and a misdemeanor theft case this year. Nintendo to Report First-Ever Annual Loss
NY - Video game company Nintendo Co. said Thursday that it expects to report its first-ever annual loss for the current fiscal year. The Japanese company and creator of the Super Mario Bros. gaming franchise slashed its full fiscal year earnings forecast for the second time citing a rise in the yen that was "beyond expectation level," as well as weaker-than-expected sales of Nintendo DS hardware and Nintendo 3DS gaming software. Nintendo's 3DS handheld games device, launched this year, wasn't the hoped-for hit, leading to price cuts and lower earnings expectations. Nintendo now projects an annual loss of 20 billion yen and a full-year profit from operations of 1 billion yen, down 99.4 percent from the year-ago period. The company also sees full fiscal year revenue of 790 billion yen, down 22 percent. The firm's previous forecast from late July had called for a fiscal year profit of 20 billion yen, 35 billion in operating profit and 900 billion yen in revenue. . For the six months ended Sept. 30, Nintendo on Thursday reported a 41 percent decline in revenue to 215.7 billion yen and a loss of 70.3 billion yen, a multiple of the year-ago loss of 2.0 billion. "I do not know the defendant, I've not had any form of relationship with the defendant nor have I had any form of contact by phone or by email, or by any other way, with the defendant," Madonna's statement reads. "In particular, I've never given the defendant permission to enter the premises or any of my other premises." Last March, Matlok was caught in Madonna's London home by her security with several of the singer's possessions. It was later revealed that he also broke into Ritchie's country residence last year and tried on his clothes. "It is extremely unsettling to know that, despite the extensive security I have, he has been able to break into two of my residential properties," the singer's statement goes on to say. Matlok has been ordered to a psychiatric hospital for an indefinite amount of time as the judge feels he poses a risk to Madonna's safety. He has also been ordered to stay 100 meters (a little more than a half a mile) away from the singer and her properties. The singer has been the center of controversy recently. Renee Zellweger, Lifetime Team for Hollywood Period Drama
MARK RALSTON/AFP/Getty ImagesRenee Zellweger Lifetime is taking a few pages out of Renee Zellweger's diary. The female-skewing cable network has picked up Cinnamon Girl, a 1960s drama loosely based on Zellweger's journey from small-town Texas to Hollywood. Created by Zellweger and Anthony Tambakis (Warrior), Cinnamon Girl will revolve around four girls as they come of age during the cultural revolution of the late 1960s and early 1970s in Los Angeles. The drama will explore Cassie, Lola, Penny and Lou's lives as they reach a crossroads of the era's political, artistic, social and sexual rebellions. "Renee's passion, clarity of character and deep emotion for this project immediately transported us to the late '60s/early '70s and created a resonance with us wanting to relive that energy," Lifetime president and GM Nancy Dubuc said in a statement announcing the news Wednesday. "Cinnamon Girl is a game changer for our network and is exactly the type of show we want to deliver." Zellweger and Gavin O'Connor (Warrior) will executive produce, with the Bridget Jones actress co-writing the story alongside Tambakis, who will pen the script. O'Connor will direct with Danny Bramson (Jerry McGuire) serving as producer and music supervisor. "We're thrilled to be partnering with Nancy Dubuc and Rob Sharenow, who share our enthusiasm and creative intentions, and we believe the timing is perfect for Cinnamon Girl to have found a home at Lifetime during this transformative juncture at the network," Zellweger said. "We're really looking forward to making Cinnamon Girl come to life as part of their campaign to expand audience expectations and redefine what it means to be a Lifetime show." The period drama marks Zellweger's second project with Lifetime. In 2008 she executive produced Living Proof, the true story of UCLA's Dr. Dennis Slamon, who helped develop the breast cancer drug Herceptin. Cinnamon also serves as the latest in a long line of high-profile projects for the cabler, which this week premiered its original movie Five, an anthology of short films exploring the impact of breast cancer on people's lives. Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore and Alicia Keys were among the directors taking part. The network is also developing a period drama revolving around The Hollywood Reporter founder William Wilkerson with Johnny Depp's shingle Infinitum Nihil attached as well as a contemporary reboot of Steel Magnolias from Hairspray duo Neil Meron and Craig Zadan. 'Method' acting
Moviegoers in the NY Film Festival filled Alice Tully Hall to capacity March. 5 for The new sony Pictures Classics' "A Harmful Method," with helmer David Cronenberg, film writer Christopher Hampton and star Michael Fassbender one of the participants. The afterparty was in the Empire Hotel, where visitors came outdoors-air roof restaurant drinking a novelty cocktail, properly known as, because of the movie they'd just seen, Bitter and Twisted (grapefruit/vodka/bitters). Because the movie is about Freud, Jung, and Jung's patient-mistress Sabina Spielrein, everybody associated with "A Harmful Method" was willing to speak psychoanalysis. Fassbender, thinking to his previous movie assignment "X-Males," thought his Magneto wouldn't say anything around the couch. "He'd just start having fun with individuals little metal ball devices that everybody has." Regarding Jung, "I'd want to speak to him about his sex with Sabina," Cronenberg stated. For Hampton, he stated, "I have really never been examined, and I am terrified of being examined -- just in case they fix me." Contact Variety Staff at news@variety.com

Snoop Dogg Family Comedy Lands at NBC
Snoop Dogg can be a step closer to adding sitcom star to his already broad resume. The rapper, along with veteran sitcom producer Don Reo (My Partner and kids, two and a half Males), withwhom he did an arc for on Fox'sBrothers, has offered a family group comedy pitch to NBC.The project concentrates on a parent or gaurdian (Snoop) and also the number of misfit children. The multi-cam half an hour, which originates fromWarner Bros. TV, counts Reo just like a author and executive producer, with Snoop attached just like a producer and star. Ted Chung(Dogg During The Night) may even be the producer round the project. Whether or not this ultimately can get acquired to series, it'll join Snoop's other small screen credits, includingDoggy Fizzle Televizzle, a 2002 sketch comedy show he produced and starred looking for MTV, andSnoop Dogg's Father Hood, possible series concentrating on his family for E!. Canada eyes change in copyright law
The Canadian government introduced legislation in Parliament to modernize the country's copyright laws on Thursday. It is basically the same law brought to the the previous Parliament but never passed, because the minority government fell, sparking an election. Now prime minister Stephen Harper's Conservatives hold a majority so they should have no trouble passing the law, which would allow consumers to record TV shows, copy songs they have bought and record Web broadcasts. The Canadian Media Production Assn., which reps producers, said it was happy to see the legislation back on the table. But critics don't like the fact it makes it illegal to break digital locks on content. For example, someone who breaks the digital encryption code on a videogame could face a fine."The Copyright Act has not kept pace with the breakneck speed at which digital technologies are being developed and entering the market," said federal industry minister Christian Paradis. "Our law was designed years before smart-phones became an everyday tool for Canadians and before MP3 players changed the way we listen to our favorite artists."The Motion Picture Assn. of Canada has been lobbying for years to modernize copyright legislation. FellowCBS leading guy Jim Parsons refused Steve Carell an Emmy for his legendary role around the Office. AMC extends running time of 'Mad Men' episodes
Here's good news for "Mad Men" fans: Episodes for the show's upcoming season will run a full 47 minutes, not the 45 minutes that had been agreed on earlier this year. "Mad Men" creator/exec producer Matthew Weiner announced the running time change Friday morning during Variety's Emmy Elite Showrunners breakfast at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. The running time of episodes had been a major sticking point earlier this year when Weiner was in tough negotiations with "Mad Men" producer AMC and Lionsgate TV. Back in March, it was announced that the first and last episodes of "Mad Men's" fifth season would run 47 minutes, as has been the show's standard since its inception, but the remaining 11 segs would run about 45 minutes to allow for more commercial time. The plan was to make those episodes available at their full 47-minute running time online. But in the intervening months, the sides came to terms on a 47.05 running time for all segs. "I don't know how they managed to make that work out," Weiner said during the drama showrunners' panel at the Emmy Elite gathering. "It was a lot of worry. I'm so thrilled." AMC insiders indicated that the push for a 45-minute running time on most segs was always more about giving the network flexibility. But clearly, Weiner's will has won out. "Mad Men's" fifth season is expected to bow in March. Contact Cynthia Littleton at cynthia.littleton@variety.comWatch Transformers 3 Dark Of The Moon

Superbly lensed and impeccably carried out by topliner Willem Dafoe, debut helmer Daniel Nettheim's adaptation from the novel by author-filmmaker Julia Leigh ("Sleeping Beauty") keeps an intriguing atmosphere, but general auds may go through they are not given enough details about the protag being fully submerged in the journey toward redemption. Opening locally March. 6 following its Toronto world preem, pic's title cast should help snare respectable biz in your area as well as in selected offshore marketplaces. The overarching plot is indeed a grabber: A soldier of fortune (Dafoe) is employed in Paris with a middleman (Jacek Koman) representing a shady biotech company to secure potentially priceless DNA from the Tasmanian Tiger. (The Tiger -- the "dog having a wolf's mind" -- has lengthy taken the general public imagination Here with gossips of their survival because the last specimen died in captivity in 1936 and also the species was formally declared extinct in 1986.) Presuming the title Martin David and also the persona of the college investigator staring at the common Tasmanian Demon, David is met inside a remote area of the island condition by Jack Mindy (Mike Neill), a nearby guide who arranges lodging for that customer in the run-lower house of Lucy Remedy (Frances O'Connor). Within the first third from the film, the interests of Lucy, left virtually comatose through the sedative drugs she's drawn in the numerous several weeks since her zoologist husband disappeared within the rose bush, are associated by her daughter, Sass (Morgana Davies), a sparky tween having a strikingly adult vocabulary, and her shy more youthful brother, Bike (Finn Woodlock). But because the film progresses, David's lonely, mysterious activities in to the backwoods for which local legend indicates may be the last making it through tiger, are interspersed with conferences having a now sedative-free Lucy, with whom he determines a bond. And the father-like reference to the kids helps him get an important result in the tiger. The fate of Lucy's husband along with a background confrontation between environment activists and loggers give a slow-burning suspense towards the mix, however the story's primary goal of having auds to sympathise with David's transformation from a difficult blank to some guy with genuine feelings is undercut through the narrow perimeters attracted around him. Though hardly supplying an in depth profile from the central character, Leigh's 1999 novel offered enriching pictures of his difficult childhood, insufficient significant associations and the encounters like a hired submit military procedures. Dafoe's perf because the lone wolf is place-on, but the lack of such backgrounding leaves auds to simply imagine what's introduced him for this personal crossroads. Aided by an engaging turn from Neill because the friendly local with something to cover and O'Connor's punchy role like a distressed wife and mother with increased to fear than she might dare imagine, Nettheim's taken into consideration direction effectively conforms David's search for that elusive tiger right into a metaphor for that various insecurities from the primary gamers. Widescreen lensing by Robert Humphreys strongly contrasts staggeringly beautiful landscapes with moody inside reflecting the characters' fears. Subtle music and haunting slivers of ambient seem by Matteo Zingales, Michael Lira and Andrew Lancaster lead mightily towards the mythical aura surrounding David's prey. Exclusive: Watch Hilary Duff's Hot Teenage Mess Get Rebuffed in Clip from Stay Cool
Hilary Duff may have seen her planned screen turn as Bonnie Parker nixed due to pregnancy, but the erstwhile Lizzie Maguire will soon appear in the Polish brothers ensemble comedy Stay Cool. The 2009 Tribeca entry concerns a thirtysomething novelist (Mark Polish) who returns to his Sacramento hometown only to be confronted with the colorful ex-flames and friends still living there and the hot-to-trot high school senior (Duff) trying to jump his bones. Get a first look at Duff’s would-be teen seductress (and her failed attempt at seduction) in Movieline’s exclusive clip. Duff was 20 when Stay Cool was filmed, and the indie comedy falls smack dab in the middle of a period in which the former tween star seemed to be making very deliberate choices for more mature fare — even if most of said roles came playing promiscuous teen jail bait in one film after another (see: War, Inc., What Goes Up). Here Duff demonstrates some developing acting chops as high schooler Shasta O’Neil, who unsuccessfully tries to mack on older man Henry McCarthy (Polish) in front of everyone at a pool party. The official synopsis for Stay Cool, which features the most random cast assemblage you’ll see all year: From Initiate Productions comes raucous and romantic comedy about one man’s return home for the commencement speech of a lifetime.Henry McCarthy (MARK POLISH), the 30-something author of the popular 80s-themed novel How Lionel Got Me Laid, returns to his suburban hometown of Sacramento to deliver the commencement speech at his former high school. Despite his success as an author Henry’s return home has sparked all of the youthful dreams, desires and particularly disappointments he’s never quite gotten over, specifically his unrequited affection for the girl who is now the local pharmacist: the elusive Scarlet Smith (WINONA RYDER).Between run-ins with the outcast friends he left behind Big Girl (SEAN ASTIN) and Wino (JOSH HOLLOWAY), the school principal (CHEVY CHASE) and a seductive senior, Shasta O’Neil (HILARY DUFF) who clearly has the hots for him, Henry is sent spinning through a time warp that incites all the old emotions and challenges of the world he grew up in. Teetering between unsettling memories of his teenage past and his all too uncertain adult future, Henry can only hope to “Stay Cool” and make it, once again, to graduation day. Stay Cool, directed by Ted Smith and starring Mark Polish, Winona Ryder, Sean Astin, Hilary Duff, Josh Holloway, Jon Cryer and Chevy Chase, will open in select theaters on September 16.
